The Fathers

Poet Allen Tate's only novel, The Fathers (1938), concerns the tragic fall of two intertwined Southern families, one from Virginia, the other from Washington, D.C. Set just before and during the Civil War, the novel narrates the decline of "Old Virginia" and the rise of a new society unbound to traditional, agrarian codes.
