Miscellaneous Notes and Sketches

A sketchbook page created in the mid-nineteenth century by Lewis Miller includes the figure of a Virginia slave tending to a tobacco plant. A handwritten poem, at top, concerns the bittersweet memories stirred by old letters, and a scene on the bottom half of the page shows small figures heading toward a town atop a hill, the town's church spires visible against the horizon.
