Chaloner in Virginia

John Armstrong Chaloner, armed with a pistol, poses for a portrait in the Virginia countryside in September 1912. The eccentric Albemarle County resident, an heir to the Astor fortune, had killed a man three years earlier in his dining room but was acquitted by a coroner's jury. (Chaloner later placed a six-pointed star on the floor where his victim had fallen.) This glass-plate negative portrait was made by Charlottesville photographer Rufus W. Holsinger.
