Staige Davis Blackford

While known primarily for his twenty-nine-year tenure as editor-in-chief of the Virginia Quarterly Review, Staige Blackford worked for the Central Intelligence Agency, fought for civil rights with the Southern Regional Council, covered Virginia politics for the Norfolk Virginian-Pilot, and served as press secretary and speech writer for Virginia governor Linwood Holton. During his tenure at VQR, he helped develop such writers as Nancy Hale, Ann Beattie, and Joyce Carol Oates. He died in June 2003, several years after this photo was taken, and one week before he was set to retire.
