Head Dress & Ornaments of the Negro Women.

This colored engraving depicts a type of jewelry worn by African women along the Ivory Coast, as well as a manner in which hair was braided early in the nineteenth century. This image reflects the viewpoint of Frederic Shoberl, a white English journalist who wrote and illustrated Africa: A Description of the Manners and Customs, with Some Historical Particulars of the Moors of the Zahara, and of the Negro Nations Between the Rivers Senegal and Gambia (1821).
