Advertisement for Pastime Stories

An 1895 poster advertises the publication of Thomas Nelson Page's Pastime Stories. This collection, along with many other of Page's stories, poems, and novels, helped paint a nostalgic and revisionist portrait of the Old South, setting the stage for such landmark narratives as Margaret Mitchell's Gone with the Wind. Edward Penfield's caricatured African American on the poster echoes the figurative and textual caricatures throughout Page's bibliography.
