Unidentified child

A well-dressed, somber-looking child sits for her portrait in this hand-colored ambrotype. Private Thomas W. Timberlake of the 2nd Virginia Infantry discovered the cased image between the bodies of two dead soldiers—one Confederate, one Union—after the Battle of Port Republic, fought on June 9, 1862. Neither the owner of the image nor the identity of the girl is known.
