1860 Election Results

A U.S. map shows the final breakdown of the 1860 presidential election results. The Republican candidate, Abraham Lincoln (red), solidly won the northeast and midwest, as well as California and Oregon; in the process, he accrued 40 percent of the popular vote. Stephen A. Douglas, the competitor from the Northern Democratic Party (blue), was next in the popular vote at 29 percent, but only managed to capture 4 percent of the electoral vote. John C. Breckinridge of the Southern Democratic Party (green) took all of the deep South, while the Constitutional Unionist John Bell (orange) captured Virginia, Kentucky, and Tennessee.
