Engraving of Richard Henry Lee

Richard Henry Lee, prominent politician and planter, stands with hand on hip in this steel engraving based on an original full-length portrait by artist Alonzo Chappel. Lee wears a black silk glove on his left hand to conceal the fact that four of his fingers were blown off when his rifle exploded while he was hunting in 1768. This image was published in volume one of Evert A. Duyckinck's National Portrait Gallery of Eminent Americans (1860), a collection of biographies and portraits.
