Jefferson Davis’s Coffin
A horse-drawn carriage transports the casket of Jefferson Davis, the former president of the Confederate States of America, through the streets of Richmond on May 31, 1893. Confederate veterans walk alongside the coffin to honor him. Davis died in Louisiana in December 1889 and was buried there. But at the behest of his widow, Varina Davis, his body was reinterred four years later at Hollywood Cemetery in Richmond, which served as the capital of the Confederacy.
