Call to Arms in Richmond

An 1865 broadside issued by Virginia governor William "Extra Billy" Smith, warns the citizens of Richmond and the state that Union troops are approaching the Confederate capital "with a view to its capture, its pillage, and its destruction." The governor ordered every person "able to wield a musket" to assemble immediately in the public square in order to take up arms in defense of Richmond.
