Confederate Veterans

This glass-plate negative, shot by the Harris & Ewing studio, shows a line of North Carolina Confederate veterans marching at a Confederate reunion in Washington, D.C. in 1917. A Confederate battle flag can be seen in the procession, carried adjacent to the United States’ flag. The Confederate flag, transformed into a national symbol by the Army of Northern Virginia, came to represent Southern valor and honor. Elderly veterans walk with canes at the rear of the group, fully clad in their Confederate uniforms.
