Blandford Cemetery
A Union soldier and a civilian pause by a gravestone in the cemetery adjacent to eighteenth-century Blandford Church in Petersburg. This albumen photograph was one of 100 hand-mounted prints included in the two-volume Gardner's Photographic Sketch Book of the War (1866), produced by the photographer Alexander Gardner. The negative for this image was made by Timothy H. O'Sullivan, who worked for Gardner's studio in Washington, D.C.
The second-largest cemetery in Virginia after Arlington National Cemetery, Blandford is the final resting place for about 30,000 Confederate soldiers.
