Patrick Henry’s Smoking Chair
A black walnut smoking chair, dating to 1765–1785, is believed to have been owned and used by Patrick Henry. This chair was among the furnishings at Red Hill plantation in Charlotte County, where Henry spent his final years. Fashioned by an unknown furniture maker, the corner chair remained at the family plantation until 1910, when many of Patrick Henry's possessions and papers were sold at auction in Philadelphia.
