J. E. B. Stuart’s Sword and Scabbard

Fingerprints are still visible on the gilded brass handle of Confederate general J. E. B. Stuart's cavalry sword. This light cavalry saber was an 1860 model made in Paris. U.S. Army officers were responsible for providing their own side arms, so Stuart either ordered it himself or was given it as a gift. The legendary cavalryman used the sword both during his days in the United States army and while serving with the Confederacy. This 43-inch sword has a plain steel blade, but includes handsome gilded brass and leather details. In his will, Stuart left the sword to his only son, J. E. B. Stuart Jr.
