William Lee
This detail from a painting by John Trumbull depicts William Lee, George Washington's enslaved valet, dressed in a red turban and a red-collared jacket as he sits astride a horse. The complete painting shows Washington and Lee atop a bluff overlooking the Hudson River during the Revolutionary War. The artist Trumbull served with Washington during the war as an aide-de-camp, and he painted this scene from memory while he was in London in 1780.
