Portrait of George Wythe

George Wythe sits in profile in this twentieth-century copy of an earlier sketch made from life of the Virginia law professor and statesman. John Trumbull sketched Wythe in Williamsburg in 1791 for inclusion in his large painting Declaration of Independence, which portrays the scene on June 28, 1776, when the first draft of the declaration was presented to the Second Continental Congress. Wythe's signature appears first among the seven Virginians who signed the Declaration of Independence.
