Confederates Advancing to the capture of disabled guns
Casualties—both men and horses—litter the battlefield during the June 27, 1862, Battle of Gaines's Mill. Artist Alfred R. Waud, who was covering the war for Harper's Weekly, created this on-the-scene sketch. Waud's handwritten title at the bottom of the drawing describes the scene as "Confederates Advancing to the capture of disabled guns." The Battle of Gaines's Mill, one of the Seven Days' Battles, was remembered by many of its participants as the most intense fight of the American Civil War.
