1950 Housing Quality in Charlottesville Map

The Charlottesville Joint Health Department created this map in 1950 and published it in An Appraisal of the Quality of Housing, Charlottesville, Virginia, January 20, 1951. The map shows the quality of housing in various largely Black sections of Charlottesville as judged by the median value of the property. The report was the first step taken by the Charlottesville City Council in its effort to secure federal funding to raze neighborhoods deemed "blighted." The Vinegar Hill neighborhood is visible to the far right of this image, within Fourth Street, Preston Avenue, and West Main Street.
