Senator Harry F. Byrd Jr. and President Johnson
Harry F. Byrd Jr., Democratic U.S. senator from Virginia, poses for a White House photograph with President Lyndon Baines Johnson. The photograph is signed: "To Harry Byrd, my best, LBJ."
Byrd served as a Democratic state senator from 1948 to 1965. In November 1965, Governor Albertis S. Harrison Jr. appointed Byrd a U.S. senator to succeed his father, Harry Byrd Sr., who was retiring due to ill health before his term was complete. Byrd Jr. later won election in 1966 and served as a member of the United States Senate until 1983, first as a Democrat and then as an Independent.
