Ku Klux Klan

An engraving in the December 19, 1868, edition of Harper's Weekly shows members of the Ku Klux Klan. Describing the violence then being committed in the South by members of that group, the article states: "Its members, in ceremonial disguise, wearing sepulchral masks, and courting the aid of darkness, have murdered without stint, and where they have not murdered they have used intimidation."
