Senator Thomas S. Martin of Virginia with Senator Frank Flint of California

In this 1913 photograph, Thomas Staples Martin (at right), a U.S senator from Virginia from 1895 until 1919, is shown with fellow Senator Frank Putnam Flint of California. A former railroad attorney, Martin became a long-term U.S. senator who used railroad money to build a powerful Democratic political machine in Virginia that became known as the Martin Organization.
