A member of the archaeological team at James Madison's Orange County plantation, Montpelier, holds up a leg of an eighteenth-century cast iron cook pot unearthed during 2019 excavations near the main house, which is visible in the background. Enslaved workers at the plantation often used cast iron pots over open fires in the yards.
