Looking toward Base Hospital
A photograph taken from atop a water tank shows a number of buildings—including a hospital, an auditorium, and a theater—that were part of Camp Lee, a large U.S. Army base near Petersburg that housed about 50,000 soldiers during World War I. This image was published in The Bayonet Remembrance Book of Camp Lee Virginia (1918), a small book of photographs chronicling camp life that was created by Roger Batchelder, who was at officer training school there.
