Waite, Miller & Company in Culpeper

This 1873 illustration shows Waite, Miller & Company, a manufacturing firm in Culpeper that produced Piedmont Guano, an agricultural fertilizer made from the excrement of bats and sea birds. A railroad that ran next to the factory transported the guano and other goods produced by the company. In the foreground is an African American woman with a basket or bowl atop her head, and a child by her side.
