The Killing of Father Segura and His Companions
This engraving published in Father Mathias Tanner, SJ's Societas Jesu Usque ad Sanguinis et Vitae Profusionem Militans (1675) depicts the killing of a group of Spanish Jesuits on February 8, 1571. The Virginia Indian Paquiquineo (also known by his baptismal name, Don Luís de Velasco) and several other Indians were said to have attacked the missionaries, using the Jesuits' own hatchets as weapons.
