John Pendleton Kennedy

John Pendleton Kennedy, a novelist, lawyer, and politician who served as a Maryland member of the U.S. House of Representatives from 1838 to 1839 and from 1841 to 1845, and as the U.S. Secretary of the Navy from 1852 to 1853, is the subject of this 1901 painting by Ulysses Dow Tenney. Tenney was a well-known and prolific artist from New Hampshire who claimed to have painted nearly 1,000 portraits during his lifetime.
