A slaveholder in search of his runaway slave is joined by a group of "negro-catchers" as they track down the enslaved man. A dog sets upon the man in the water and catches him. A second runaway, whom they discovered in the midst of their search, "finds a watery grave." This scene is dramatized in William Wells Brown's Clotelle: A Tale of the Southern States (1864).
