Attucks Theatre
This is a virtual tour of the Attucks Theatre in Norfolk, Virginia. The theater was designed by Black architect Harvey Johnson and opened in 1919. Known as the "Apollo Theater of the South," the Attucks Theatre hosted performers such as Cab Calloway, Sarah Vaughan, Duke Ellington, Mamie Smith, Ella Fitzgerald, Nat King Cole, Billie Holiday, and Redd Foxx. In 1977, the Attucks Theatre was listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Now owned and operated by the City of Norfolk, the theater is still in operation.
