The Letters and Times of the Tylers

In 1882, Lyon Gardiner Tyler and his first wife, Anne Tucker, returned to his home state of Virginia. Tyler began practicing law in Richmond, and, with his mother, began work on a three-volume study of politics during the lives of his father, U.S. president John Tyler, and his grandfather, Virginia's colonial governor, John Tyler. This notable work would pave the way for Lyon Tyler's future prolific writing in Virginia history, including Encyclopedia of Virginia Biography (1915) and History of Virginia from 1763 to 1861 (1924).
