This is the title page of the second edition of Virginia Randolph Cary's Letters on Female Character, Addressed to a Young Lady, on the Death of Her Mother (1830), an influential text that offered advice on how women should behave. Cary warned women against being in the limelight and under "the unchecked gaze of the world." She further advised, "Meekness is not only an appropriate feminine attribute, but a fundamental virtue of the female character." The original edition of the book was published in 1828.
