Advertisement for Runaway Slaves

Landon Carter, prominent member of the House of Burgesses and a son of the land baron Robert "King" Carter, advertises for the capture and return of two runaway slaves on October 7, 1758. "A tawny young Negro Fellow, named Will," had run off from Carter's house in Richmond County and had returned to Rippon Hall, another Carter property near Williamsburg, in order to spirit off his sister Sarah. Will had lived previously at Rippon but had been "removed on Account of his ill Behaviour." It was believed that the pair were headed toward the Eastern Shore with another slave who had escaped from a plantation on the York River before he could be sent abroad by his master.
