Migrant Workers Near Accomac

One of a series of photos by Farm Security Administration photographer Jack Delano; his first assignment was to document the travels of migrant workers along the Atlantic coast during the Great Depression. Here, migrant workers toil in an onion field on Virginia's Eastern Shore; they are likely part of a group of workers that arrived from potato fields in Belcross, North Carolina. The depression ushered in an era of rigid economizing on Virginia farms, with little or no money with which to upgrade or maintain equipment or property.
