The Chesapeake” and the “”Leopard.”” 21st June 1807.“””

This watercolor painting depicts the USS Chesapeake (right) exchanging fire with the HMS Leopard off the Virginia coast on June 22, 1807. The British warship attacked the American frigate in an attempt to ferret out British deserters. The artist misidentified the date of the encounter on the lower right corner of the canvas, writing that it took place on "21st June 1807."
