Cowrie Shell
This is a reticulate cowrie helmet, the shell of a marine snail native to the Atlantic region, which was unearthed during archaeological excavations of a slave quarter at George Mason's Gunston Hall in Fairfax County. Gold Ring Cowrie shells, which are similar to this but native to the Indo-Pacific Ocean, were often used by Africans for personal adornment, religious ceremonies, or currency.
