A Topographical and Statistical Account of the Province of Louisiana

This detail from a page in A Topographical and Statistical Account of the Province of Louisiana (1803) lists the 1785 census for Louisiana Territory. The population is divided into three categories: whites, free people of color, and slaves. This was part of an eighty-page compilation of information provided to President Thomas Jefferson about the territory that comprised the Louisiana Purchase. The information, which was supplied by Dr. John Sibley of Natchitoches, Louisiana, and others, included descriptions of the land, its climate, its natural resources, the products it produced, and the people who lived there.
