Union Agricultural Society Certificate

A certificate dated February 17, 1855, declares that the wealthy planter James Coles Bruce of Halifax County is a lifetime member of the Union Agricultural Society of Virginia and North Carolina for having contributed $20 to the organization. Bruce was also the president of the society, as noted in his signature at the end of the document. The state seals for both Virginia and North Carolina are displayed in the illustrations at top.
