Hector Davis’s Slave Business

A page from the Richmond Business Directory (1858) lists, at top, some of the practicing attorneys in the city, and, at bottom, three auctioneers. The listing for Hector Davis's business notes that he is an "Auctioneer & Commission Merchant For Sale of Negroes." His firm, located on Franklin Street, included a "safe and commodious jail," where he lodged slaves awaiting sale for thirty cents a day.
