Slave Trader Announcement
This 1852 circular letter from James B. Hargrove announces that he has set up a slave trading company in the Saint Charles Hotel in Richmond, taking over a room for auctioning slaves that had formerly been used by Benjamin Davis's slave company. Hargrove quotes the market prices for enslaved men, women, and children—listing the varying prices for children according to height. He also notes at the bottom of the form that there is a robust market for enslaved girls, "as the market is poorly supplied."
