Saint John’s Church, Richmond

This is Saint John's Church, the oldest church in Richmond. The original structure dates to 1741, though it has been modified extensively over time. William Byrd II donated the land and timber for the church. On March 23, 1775, Patrick Henry delivered a speech here that famously ended, "Give me liberty, or give me death!"

Frances Benjamin Johnston took this photograph in the 1930s. A well-known photographer from Washington, D.C., Johnston documented historic buildings and gardens throughout the South as part of the Carnegie Survey of the Architecture of the South.
