Queen Elizabeth

Queen Elizabeth I of England is shown in this contemporary portrait by an unidentified artist. The painting was presented as a gift to Virginia by Viscount and Lady Astor in 1926. The portrait hangs in the Executive Mansion in Richmond. Known as the Virgin Queen because she never married, Elizabeth became the first English monarch to sponsor colonization efforts in North America.
