Confederate Flag Sewn by Constance Cary (Reverse)

This flag, sewn by Constance Cary in the early days of the American Civil War, is one of the first versions of the Confederate battle flag. At the request of a Confederate congressional committee, Cary and her cousins Hetty and Jennie Cary each sewed a battle flag in the autumn of 1861. The reverse side of Constance's flag is shown here in order to highlight her name, which she sewed in the lower right of the flag, on the blue stripe. The flag is now part of the collections at the American Civil War Museum in Richmond.
