Preface to Willis M. Carter’s Family History

In the preface to his twenty-two-page family history and personal narrative, Willis M. Carter states his intention "to record the most particular incidents and other subject matter relative to our family." Born into slavery in Virginia, Carter worked as an educator and newspaper editor late in the nineteenth century.
