Elizabeth Parke Custis

Elizabeth Parke Custis, the oldest of Martha Washington's four surviving grandchildren, wears a miniature portrait of an unidentified man around her neck in this 1785 painting by the English artist Robert Edge Pine. Custis was only eight years old when this portrait was made. Pine came to Mount Vernon and painted six family members—Martha Washington, her four grandchildren, and a niece—all for the price of $60.
