Betty Washington Lewis

Elizabeth "Betty" Washington Lewis, the sister of George Washington, is the subject of this portrait attributed to artist John Wollaston. Betty Washington married Fielding Lewis, a wealthy businessman and politician from Fredericksburg, when she was sixteen. Wollaston, an English artist, painted both Betty and Fielding Lewis in the mid-eighteenth century, while he was traveling throughout the American colonies executing formal portraits.
