This receipt, dated August 9, 1799, indicates that Martha Carr, Thomas Jefferson's older sister, received payment for three enslaved workers she had hired out to her son Peter Carr for the year 1789. Martha Carr charged her son thirty pounds for the labor performed by Harry, Juba, and Abbey. The enslaved did not receive any money for their work.
