McClure’s Magazine Cover
The artist F. Graham Cootes painted this cover illustration for the February 1912 edition of McClure's Magazine. This issue includes the opening section of Willa Cather's first novel, referred to here as Alexander's Masquerade. (In book form, the novel was called Alexander's Bridge.) Cather was serving as the managing editor of the magazine when her book was serialized; shortly thereafter she resigned from her position and took up fiction-writing full time.
