The Fallen
Three downcast Confederate soldiers surround a tomb commemorating "The Fallen"—i.e., their comrades who died during the Civil War. This engraving serves as the frontispiece for John Lipscomb Johnson's The University Memorial: Biographical Sketches of Alumni of the University of Virginia Who Fell in the Confederate War (1871), a book which describes most of the 500 University of Virginia students and alumni who died during the war.
