Execution of the Conspirators in Abraham Lincoln’s Assassination

The four conspirators convicted of plotting to kill President Abraham Lincoln and sentenced to execution—Mary E. Surratt, Lewis Payne, David E. Herold, George A. Atzerodt—hang from nooses on July 7, 1865, in the courtyard of Washington Arsenal (later Fort McNair), in Washington, D.C. Alexander Gardner, well known for his Civil War photography, took this image.
