Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel

On April 15, 1964, the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel (CBBT) opened as a two-lane fixed crossing of the Chesapeake Bay between Virginia Beach and the Delmarva Peninsula. By the late 1980s, however, the Chesapeake Bay Ferry Commission decided to fund an expansion in order to relieve traffic and ensure safety on the crossing. After completion of the parallel bridge, and renovation of the original structure, the expanded CBBT reopened on April 19, 1999.
